When sharing our lit. circles i have noticed that reading the same novel has a different feel to it after listening to other people's opinions on the book, their passage choice and reasoning, their connections and unique questions. It helps me to think of the book differently and understand how other people think their passages to be important. But also during lit. circles, we make connections.
Sometimes we make connections to other books. Like on the first literature circle i did for Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. I said that is connected to Armstrong Sperry's Call It Courage. I thought that both books had the same concept; A boy being stuck alone in the wilderness using his guts and instincts to survive. We also make connections to our own lives and even relate them to other stories and see how they all chain up.
In lit. Circle time we also predict what is going to happen next in our stories. Will their be a big accident or tragedy? Or will something good or funny happen? We predict by looking at the chain of events in our story and look at what we think will happen based on past events and present state. That Is how Lit. Circles Help us to better understand our novels.
